The idea in brief.
Small-business credit is often decided from records that describe different versions of the same activity: invoices, processor settlements, bank deposits and management accounts. Amlok’s role is to connect permitted evidence so an analyst can explain operating cash generation and the obligations it must support. This guide covers the practical implementation from a new application to a monitored business, with special attention to owner transfers, customer concentration and seasonality.
- Count an economic event once even when it appears in several systems.
- Separate financing and owner transfers from operating receipts.
- Evaluate the same business and evidence window before claiming an improvement.
A practical implementation guide grounded in Amlok’s documented product scope and segment research. Market figures retain their original population and period. Worked examples are invented, reproducible scenarios. They do not represent customer results, underwriting cutoffs or claims of validated model performance.
The market and the decision.
ISED’s 2024 small-business credit findings report an 89% debt-financing approval rate and 91% of requested debt dollars authorized. One describes applicant outcomes and the other dollar amounts. Neither measures repayment performance. [1]
The underwriting opportunity is understanding the business behind the request. A seasonal retailer, professional practice and contractor can report the same annual revenue while generating cash on very different schedules. A connected assessment should show when revenue becomes available cash and whether existing and proposed commitments fit that cycle.
Financing access has more than one denominator

What Amlok brings to the workflow.
Insights can bring authorized accounting, banking, commerce, payment and application evidence into a dated underwriting workflow. Supported calculations and verification stages belong to the agreed assessment. The reviewer receives a risk snapshot with evidence references and explicit gaps instead of a ratio whose inputs cannot be traced. [2] [3]
For an SMB lender, this can support revenue reconciliation, recurring-obligation review and assessment of owner or related-business relationships where the evidence permits them. Entity links need evidence; a shared name is not enough. Signal can then reassess supported financial changes from the approved baseline, giving the lender continuity between the credit memo and later reviews.
Connect the evidence that matters.
Agree the evidence perimeter before asking for an assessment. Each record needs a subject, source, observation date, currency where applicable, and coverage window. Resolve conflicting statements explicitly; the most recently uploaded file is not necessarily the most recent financial position. [3]
| Evidence | What it supports | Review requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Bank records | Receipts, cash availability and recurring payments | Identify internal transfers, loan draws and owner injections. |
| Accounting and invoice ledgers | Revenue recognition, receivables, payables and expenses | Preserve credits, write-offs and accounting periods. |
| Commerce and payment records | Sales, refunds, disputes, fees and settlements | Explain timing and deductions before calling deposits revenue. |
| Entity and ownership evidence | Legal business, related entities and authorized persons | Do not assume every related entity guarantees the facility. |
| Application, debt and repayment schedules | Requested purpose, existing obligations and actual performance | Reconcile refinances and avoid counting replaced debt twice. |
Measures your team can review.
Use the definitions below as an assessment specification. Your institution selects policy thresholds and permitted adjustments. These measures are useful only when their inputs, time periods and contractual meanings align. [4]
- Cash available for debt service: define taxes, owner draws, exceptional items and the observation period before using a coverage ratio.
- Revenue quality: reconcile invoiced or commerce activity to receipts and disclose unmatched amounts.
- Cash conversion: follow receivables, inventory and payables over compatible periods.
- Customer concentration: largest-customer receipts divided by verified operating receipts, with related buyers grouped when supported.
- Seasonal liquidity: compare recurring obligations with low-period cash availability, not only an annual average.
Worked example: deposits overstate operating receipts.
An illustrative business has CAD 120,000 in monthly bank inflows. CAD 30,000 is a new loan and CAD 10,000 is an owner transfer, leaving CAD 80,000 in supported operating receipts. After CAD 60,000 operating outflows and CAD 4,000 of specified tax and owner-draw adjustments, cash available for debt service is CAD 16,000.
With CAD 12,000 scheduled debt service, coverage is 1.33×. Treating all inflows as operating receipts would produce a misleading 4.67×. The calculation is a cash-based example under stated assumptions, not a universal DSCR definition; the facility agreement and lender policy determine the applicable measure.
| Measure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Bank inflows | 120,000 |
| Less financing proceeds | −30,000 |
| Less owner transfer | −10,000 |
| Supported operating receipts | 80,000 |
| Operating outflows | −60,000 |
| Specified tax / owner-draw adjustments | −4,000 |
| Cash available for debt service | 16,000 |
| Scheduled debt service | 12,000 |
| Coverage | 1.33× |
Keep the original decision in view.
Follow supported changes in cash generation, collections and obligations against a baseline that records the original business cycle. A seasonal decline is not necessarily deterioration; a new integration can increase apparent activity without increasing actual sales. Compare the same sources and explain changed coverage.
Signal can provide the changed records, assessment and supporting evidence for review. Customer concentration, delayed collections and new supported obligations are useful review topics when they fall inside the agreed workflow. The institution determines whether to request information or change exposure; Amlok does not perform collection activity. [3]
From evidence to a reviewable change
- 01Resolve the business
Link authorized entities, accounts and records.
- 02Reconcile the cash
Explain sales, settlements, transfers and financing.
- 03Assess the request
Compare supported capacity with the proposed obligation.
- 04Monitor continuity
Review new evidence against the approved cash-flow baseline.
Build it into your operating model.
Start with one defined use case, your current decision policy and the output your reviewers need. Confirm which source connections, document types, calculations and verification stages are available within the agreed workflow. Create the subject and application, obtain the required authorization, synchronize permitted records and inspect the ready input manifest. Freeze that evidence window before launching an Insights underwriting run. [3]
Store the completed risk snapshot with the lender’s actual decision and its reasons. For ongoing monitoring, use a ready approved baseline from the completed assessment or the agreed existing-portfolio onboarding process. Signal compares newly available evidence with that baseline. Signed webhooks notify your systems; source cadence and consent determine freshness. A requested daily check does not guarantee daily source data. [3]
Design separate routes for a supported risk change, a source outage and an unresolved discrepancy. Retain source references and reviewer corrections. Borrower outreach, payments, limit changes, collections and insurance administration remain in your authorized systems. Verification and analytical investigation are included stages within an entitled Insights or Signal workflow, not independent Amlok products. [2]
Prove the fit before expanding.
Begin with representative industries, business sizes and source combinations. Independently label transfers, financing proceeds and economic-event matches. Hold out the business and supported related entities, then test later periods. [4]
Compare bank-only and richer evidence on the same eligible files. Measure calculation error, unresolved reconciliation and analyst correction effort before credit-outcome performance. The public SBA experiment is a defined US programme task; it does not establish Canadian SMB cash-flow understanding or portfolio loss reductions.
Agree success criteria before reviewing the test results. Compare the current process and the Amlok-supported process on the same permitted evidence, recording analyst time, corrections, unresolved cases and completed outputs. Report coverage alongside speed so incomplete files cannot make the workflow appear faster. Monitor quality by source availability and relevant customer cohorts, with uncertainty where samples are small.
Amlok’s public results currently document specific structured-loan and financial-evidence retrieval experiments. Those results are useful evidence about those tasks; they do not validate every product, institution or industry in this guide. A deployment claim needs a representative evaluation of your use case. [5]
- Scope: choose one product, one decision moment, required evidence and a clearly accountable reviewer.
- Replay: use dated historical snapshots with later outcomes kept out of the input evidence.
- Shadow: compare outputs alongside your existing process before relying on them operationally.
- Expand: review quality, data continuity and monitoring relevance before adding further cohorts or sources.
