The idea in brief.
Commercial credit is rarely one borrower, one account and one simple ratio. The assessment may cover an operating company, a holding group, several facilities and contracts with different definitions. This guide explains how Amlok can support a consistent evidence trail across those objects. It separates amounts committed, drawn, available and secured, then connects the approved assessment to later liquidity and covenant reviews.
- Define the obligor and consolidation perimeter before calculating leverage or coverage.
- Treat commitments, drawdowns, guarantees and collateral as different objects.
- Use the contract’s covenant definition and preserve amendments and exceptions.
A practical implementation guide grounded in Amlok’s documented product scope and segment research. Market figures retain their original population and period. Worked examples are invented, reproducible scenarios. They do not represent customer results, underwriting cutoffs or claims of validated model performance.
The market and the decision.
BCE’s 2025 annual financial report discloses CAD 6,393 million of committed credit facilities, CAD 1,409 million drawn, CAD 71 million of letters of credit and CAD 2,550 million of commercial paper, leaving CAD 2,363 million net available. This public issuer example illustrates why a headline facility limit is not available cash. It is not an Amlok customer result. [1]
Commercial assessments need that same discipline at every level. A guarantee may support a facility without adding liquidity. A security registration may describe collateral without proving lien priority. A revolving commitment may have availability conditions that are absent from the headline announcement.

What Amlok brings to the workflow.
Insights can support a source-backed assessment of supplied commercial financials, facility documents and authorized operating evidence. The agreed workflow brings supported calculations, verification and analytical investigation into the same assessment context. Contract-specific definitions and missing inputs should remain visible in the completed snapshot. [2] [3]
The practical benefit is a reviewable chain from legal obligor to financial period, contractual clause and calculated result. Where group relationships are supported, the analyst can inspect related exposures without treating every company as an independent borrower. Signal can compare subsequent evidence with the approved position, while credit officers retain decisions about waivers, limits, collateral and intervention.
Connect the evidence that matters.
Agree the evidence perimeter before asking for an assessment. Each record needs a subject, source, observation date, currency where applicable, and coverage window. Resolve conflicting statements explicitly; the most recently uploaded file is not necessarily the most recent financial position. [3]
| Evidence | What it supports | Review requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Legal structure and guarantees | Obligor, guarantor and supported group relationships | Distinguish ownership, guarantee and consolidated reporting scope. |
| Financial statements and management accounts | Earnings, cash flow, leverage and liquidity | Align periods and document exceptional-item adjustments. |
| Facility agreements and amendments | Commitments, pricing, covenants and availability conditions | Apply effective amendments; retain exceptions and defined terms. |
| Collateral and security evidence | Asset identity, valuation and claimed security position | Separate supplied evidence from legal conclusions on enforceability. |
| Balances, draws and repayment schedules | Utilization, availability and contractual performance | Include relevant letters of credit or reserve usage under the agreement. |
Measures your team can review.
Use the definitions below as an assessment specification. Your institution selects policy thresholds and permitted adjustments. These measures are useful only when their inputs, time periods and contractual meanings align. [4]
- Leverage: debt divided by the expressly defined earnings or asset measure, with netting and consolidation treatment.
- Debt-service coverage: agreed cash or earnings numerator over contractual debt service for the same period.
- Covenant headroom: distance to the actual threshold, distinguishing upper and lower limits.
- Facility utilization: drawn amount over valid commitment; availability may require further deductions.
- Concentration: exposure by supported obligor group, sector, geography and collateral without double counting.
Worked example: headroom can disappear before a missed payment.
Assume a commercial agreement defines leverage as CAD 8.4 million of specified debt divided by CAD 2.4 million of agreed EBITDA, with a maximum of 4.0×. Current leverage is 3.50× and ratio headroom 0.50×. No conclusion is possible until the covenant definition, permitted adjustments and measurement date have been confirmed.
If the agreed EBITDA measure falls 15% to CAD 2.04 million while debt is unchanged, leverage rises to 4.12×. This illustrative scenario crosses the assumed limit before any payment failure is modelled. It is a scenario for review, not a finding that a real borrower breached a covenant.
| Measure | Base | 15% EBITDA decline |
|---|---|---|
| Specified debt | 8.40 | 8.40 |
| Agreed EBITDA | 2.40 | 2.04 |
| Debt / EBITDA | 3.50× | 4.12× |
| Assumed maximum | 4.00× | 4.00× |
| Headroom to maximum | 0.50× | −0.12× |
Keep the original decision in view.
A commercial monitoring workflow needs the measurement calendar as well as the metric. A covenant calculated from stale statements is different from one calculated at the contractual reporting date. An approaching threshold, a documented breach and a missing certificate should have distinct meanings in the review queue.
Signal can retain the original snapshot and explain changes supported by new statements, facility records or authorized operating evidence. Avoid describing an undrawn commitment as unrestricted cash. Lender staff interpret contractual remedies, approve waivers and manage the relationship through their own systems. [3]
From evidence to a reviewable change
- 01Set the perimeter
Identify obligor, group, facility and applicable agreement.
- 02Reproduce the calculation
Trace every input and adjustment to dated evidence.
- 03Compare the position
Keep threshold, availability and coverage changes distinct.
- 04Review the exception
Let credit officers determine the contractual response.
Build it into your operating model.
Start with one defined use case, your current decision policy and the output your reviewers need. Confirm which source connections, document types, calculations and verification stages are available within the agreed workflow. Create the subject and application, obtain the required authorization, synchronize permitted records and inspect the ready input manifest. Freeze that evidence window before launching an Insights underwriting run. [3]
Store the completed risk snapshot with the lender’s actual decision and its reasons. For ongoing monitoring, use a ready approved baseline from the completed assessment or the agreed existing-portfolio onboarding process. Signal compares newly available evidence with that baseline. Signed webhooks notify your systems; source cadence and consent determine freshness. A requested daily check does not guarantee daily source data. [3]
Design separate routes for a supported risk change, a source outage and an unresolved discrepancy. Retain source references and reviewer corrections. Borrower outreach, payments, limit changes, collections and insurance administration remain in your authorized systems. Verification and analytical investigation are included stages within an entitled Insights or Signal workflow, not independent Amlok products. [2]
Prove the fit before expanding.
Evaluate term extraction, consolidation scope and covenant arithmetic before outcome models. Include amendments, unusual definitions and incomplete certificates. Keep related corporate groups outside both development and test partitions. [4]
Use adjudicated contract examples to measure missed exceptions and unsupported calculations. For monitoring, count relevant alerts per facility-period and the time available to review them. Public financing announcements establish neither utilization nor successful repayment; outcome validation requires the corresponding dated portfolio records.
Agree success criteria before reviewing the test results. Compare the current process and the Amlok-supported process on the same permitted evidence, recording analyst time, corrections, unresolved cases and completed outputs. Report coverage alongside speed so incomplete files cannot make the workflow appear faster. Monitor quality by source availability and relevant customer cohorts, with uncertainty where samples are small.
Amlok’s public results currently document specific structured-loan and financial-evidence retrieval experiments. Those results are useful evidence about those tasks; they do not validate every product, institution or industry in this guide. A deployment claim needs a representative evaluation of your use case. [5]
- Scope: choose one product, one decision moment, required evidence and a clearly accountable reviewer.
- Replay: use dated historical snapshots with later outcomes kept out of the input evidence.
- Shadow: compare outputs alongside your existing process before relying on them operationally.
- Expand: review quality, data continuity and monitoring relevance before adding further cohorts or sources.
