The idea in brief.
Trade credit connects the seller’s cash flow, the buyer’s payment behaviour and the insurer’s contractual exposure. Those are related but different risk questions. This guide describes how an agreed Amlok workflow can organize authorized business and receivable evidence for assessment and monitoring, while keeping the seller, buyer, invoice and policy distinct. It does not treat an unpaid invoice as an automatically covered claim.
- Resolve buyer groups before measuring concentration and policy-limit utilization.
- Keep contractual aging, disputes and insurance eligibility separate.
- Evaluate non-payment and insured claims as different outcomes.
A practical implementation guide grounded in Amlok’s documented product scope and segment research. Market figures retain their original population and period. Worked examples are invented, reproducible scenarios. They do not represent customer results, underwriting cutoffs or claims of validated model performance.
The market and the decision.
Berne Union’s 2026 market commentary reports EUR 2.1 billion of short-term export credit insurance claims in 2025, with claims up 17% while aggregate limits grew less than 0.2%. The underlying submissions remain subject to revision. This is international member-market context, not a Canadian trade-credit default rate. [1]
For a portfolio team, the evidence challenge is tracing a reported exposure to the right buyer, invoice period and policy terms. A late receivable can constrain a seller’s liquidity before a claim exists. Conversely, an invoice can be unpaid but excluded from cover, disputed or subject to a reporting condition.

What Amlok brings to the workflow.
Insights provides an authorized assessment workflow with supported evidence, calculations and analytical investigation. For a trade-credit use case, scope the implementation around the insured business and the permitted buyer, invoice and policy evidence. Segment-specific eligibility and policy calculations must be agreed and supported by actual inputs. [2] [4]
Amlok can help make the financial picture reviewable: who owes the money, how old the receivable is, how collections changed and where supported concentration sits. Signal can compare new evidence with an approved baseline. The insurer or institution determines cover, underwriting authority, buyer-limit actions and claims handling in its own systems. [3]
Connect the evidence that matters.
Agree the evidence perimeter before asking for an assessment. Each record needs a subject, source, observation date, currency where applicable, and coverage window. Resolve conflicting statements explicitly; the most recently uploaded file is not necessarily the most recent financial position. [3]
| Evidence | What it supports | Review requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Seller and buyer identities | Legal counterparties and supported related-buyer groups | Do not merge similar names without corroborating evidence. |
| Invoice and collection ledgers | Due dates, partial receipts, credits and aging | Retain disputes and payment allocations to the correct invoice. |
| Policy and buyer-limit evidence | Applicable period, limits, exclusions and conditions | Invoice existence alone does not establish insurance cover. |
| Authorized business financials | Seller liquidity and supported buyer context | Separate seller stress from buyer non-payment. |
| Claim and recovery records, if authorized | Observed claim events, amounts and recoveries | Distinguish reported, incurred and paid outcomes and their dates. |
Measures your team can review.
Use the definitions below as an assessment specification. Your institution selects policy thresholds and permitted adjustments. These measures are useful only when their inputs, time periods and contractual meanings align. [4]
- Receivable aging: unpaid exposure by contractual days past due after valid credits and receipts.
- Buyer concentration: eligible exposure to a supported buyer group divided by total eligible exposure.
- Limit utilization: eligible insured exposure divided by the documented applicable buyer limit.
- Claims severity: defined claim amounts, deductible, coverage share and recovery measured separately.
- Loss ratio: consistent claims and earned-premium measures; not claims divided by credit limits unless explicitly defined otherwise.
Worked example: gross receivables are not covered exposure.
Assume CAD 800,000 of receivables to a buyer group. The supplied eligibility rules exclude CAD 100,000 of disputed invoices and CAD 50,000 outside the eligible age range. The remaining CAD 650,000 is compared with a documented CAD 600,000 buyer limit.
Eligible exposure uses 108.3% of that limit, leaving CAD 50,000 above it before considering further policy terms. This does not calculate a claim payment: coverage percentages, deductibles, waiting periods and other conditions are outside the example. Every assumption is illustrative and requires the actual policy in an implementation.
| Measure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gross buyer-group receivables | 800,000 |
| Disputed invoices excluded | −100,000 |
| Age exclusions | −50,000 |
| Eligible exposure under assumed rules | 650,000 |
| Documented buyer limit | 600,000 |
| Exposure / limit | 108.3% |
| Exposure above limit | 50,000 |
Keep the original decision in view.
Monitor changes in collections, aging and supported concentration without equating them to claim events. Preserve the original buyer grouping and policy period so a later review can explain whether the exposure changed or the underlying identity mapping was corrected.
Signal can present supported changes with the baseline and source evidence. A policy amendment, disputed invoice or delayed ledger update may change the interpretation. The institution remains responsible for coverage decisions, notices, buyer-limit changes, claims administration and outreach. [3]
From evidence to a reviewable change
- 01Resolve the exposure
Link seller, buyer group, invoice and policy evidence.
- 02Apply documented terms
Separate gross, eligible and potentially covered amounts.
- 03Observe collection changes
Track aging, receipts, disputes and concentration.
- 04Review policy context
Let authorized staff determine underwriting or claim actions.
Build it into your operating model.
Start with one defined use case, your current decision policy and the output your reviewers need. Confirm which source connections, document types, calculations and verification stages are available within the agreed workflow. Create the subject and application, obtain the required authorization, synchronize permitted records and inspect the ready input manifest. Freeze that evidence window before launching an Insights underwriting run. [3]
Store the completed risk snapshot with the lender’s actual decision and its reasons. For ongoing monitoring, use a ready approved baseline from the completed assessment or the agreed existing-portfolio onboarding process. Signal compares newly available evidence with that baseline. Signed webhooks notify your systems; source cadence and consent determine freshness. A requested daily check does not guarantee daily source data. [3]
Design separate routes for a supported risk change, a source outage and an unresolved discrepancy. Retain source references and reviewer corrections. Borrower outreach, payments, limit changes, collections and insurance administration remain in your authorized systems. Verification and analytical investigation are included stages within an entitled Insights or Signal workflow, not independent Amlok products. [2]
Prove the fit before expanding.
Independently adjudicate buyer resolution, invoice aging and eligibility calculations. Hold out related buyer groups and later periods so the same economic exposure cannot appear in development and evaluation. [4]
Evaluate collection deterioration separately from claims, which depend on reporting delays and policy conditions. Report false buyer merges and missed links. A pilot should demonstrate that reviewers can reproduce a limit calculation and identify missing terms before claiming improved insurance-loss performance.
Agree success criteria before reviewing the test results. Compare the current process and the Amlok-supported process on the same permitted evidence, recording analyst time, corrections, unresolved cases and completed outputs. Report coverage alongside speed so incomplete files cannot make the workflow appear faster. Monitor quality by source availability and relevant customer cohorts, with uncertainty where samples are small.
Amlok’s public results currently document specific structured-loan and financial-evidence retrieval experiments. Those results are useful evidence about those tasks; they do not validate every product, institution or industry in this guide. A deployment claim needs a representative evaluation of your use case. [5]
- Scope: choose one product, one decision moment, required evidence and a clearly accountable reviewer.
- Replay: use dated historical snapshots with later outcomes kept out of the input evidence.
- Shadow: compare outputs alongside your existing process before relying on them operationally.
- Expand: review quality, data continuity and monitoring relevance before adding further cohorts or sources.
