AT A GLANCE

The idea in brief.

Premium finance links a borrower’s installment obligation to one or more underlying insurance policies. The loan balance, insurance premium and potentially recoverable premium are different amounts. This guide focuses on property and casualty premium-finance evidence and explains how an agreed Amlok workflow can support assessment and monitoring without assuming that the unexpired policy period is fully refundable. Life-insurance premium finance has different collateral and contractual mechanics and requires a separately scoped assessment.

  • Match each finance agreement to its policies, insured party and effective dates.
  • Distinguish calculated recoverable premium from cash actually received.
  • Track installment capacity and recoverability as separate sources of risk.
Evidence & scope

A practical implementation guide grounded in Amlok’s documented product scope and segment research. Market figures retain their original population and period. Worked examples are invented, reproducible scenarios. They do not represent customer results, underwriting cutoffs or claims of validated model performance.

The market and the decision.

Wintrust’s 2025 annual filing reports approximately USD 21.8 billion of premium-finance receivables originated in 2025 versus USD 20.0 billion in 2024. Its USD 16.5 billion average 2025 balance comprised roughly 48% property/casualty and 52% life. These are one institution’s figures, not Canadian market totals. [1]

The distinction between those portfolios matters. A P&C financing assessment can involve cancellation-related return premium under specific agreements, while life-premium financing may involve other collateral arrangements. Neither should inherit a recoverability assumption from the other simply because both finance an insurance premium.

What Amlok brings to the workflow.

Insights can bring the authorized finance agreement, policy evidence, borrower financial information and supported calculations into a reviewable assessment. The implementation needs explicit rules for which policy terms and recoverability calculations are supported; missing contractual rights must remain missing. [2] [4]

The practical output should explain both the borrower’s ability to meet installments and the evidence behind any recovery assumption. Signal can compare supported payment, cash-flow and policy-related changes with an approved baseline. The finance company and insurer retain policy administration, notices, cancellation decisions and collection activity. [3]

Connect the evidence that matters.

Agree the evidence perimeter before asking for an assessment. Each record needs a subject, source, observation date, currency where applicable, and coverage window. Resolve conflicting statements explicitly; the most recently uploaded file is not necessarily the most recent financial position. [3]

Measures your team can review.

Use the definitions below as an assessment specification. Your institution selects policy thresholds and permitted adjustments. These measures are useful only when their inputs, time periods and contractual meanings align. [4]

  • Financed exposure: outstanding principal and documented charges at the observation date.
  • Payment burden: scheduled installments relative to supported household or business cash flow.
  • Recoverable-premium coverage: supported recoverable amount divided by outstanding exposure.
  • Recovery timing: time from a defined event to actual cash receipt, including unresolved cases.
  • Net loss: remaining exposure after observed recoveries, with eligible costs and fees stated separately.

Worked example: unearned does not mean fully recoverable.

Assume an illustrative CAD 12,000 annual premium, a CAD 2,400 down payment and CAD 9,600 financed principal, with ten equal principal-only installments of CAD 960. Interest and fees are omitted solely to make the arithmetic transparent. After four installments, principal outstanding is CAD 5,760.

Suppose supplied policy terms and applicable rights support CAD 4,800 of recoverable premium at that date. Coverage is 83.3% and the principal gap CAD 960 before additional costs or timing effects. The figure is assumed, not derived from a simple remaining-month fraction. An implementation must establish the real terms and eventual receipt.

Keep the original decision in view.

Monitor the agreement and policies as linked objects. A policy endorsement can alter the relevant premium, a payment adjustment can alter arrears, and a delay in actual refund receipt can change liquidity even if the calculated recoverable amount is unchanged.

Signal can retain the original assessment and present supported changes for review. Keep policy status, calculated recoverability and realized recovery separate. The institution determines notices, cancellation, collection and other administration under its own authority; Amlok supplies evidence and assessments rather than executing those actions. [3]

From evidence to a reviewable change

  1. 01Match agreement and policies

Identify borrower, insured party, terms and dates.

  2. 02Assess two dimensions

Evaluate installment capacity and supported recovery.

  3. 03Observe changed evidence

Follow payment, policy and financial records.

  4. 04Reconcile actual recovery

Distinguish expected amounts from cash received.

Proposed implementation pattern for Premium Finance. Insights and Signal supply assessments and supported changes; the institution owns decisions and intervention.[3][4]

Build it into your operating model.

Start with one defined use case, your current decision policy and the output your reviewers need. Confirm which source connections, document types, calculations and verification stages are available within the agreed workflow. Create the subject and application, obtain the required authorization, synchronize permitted records and inspect the ready input manifest. Freeze that evidence window before launching an Insights underwriting run. [3]

Store the completed risk snapshot with the lender’s actual decision and its reasons. For ongoing monitoring, use a ready approved baseline from the completed assessment or the agreed existing-portfolio onboarding process. Signal compares newly available evidence with that baseline. Signed webhooks notify your systems; source cadence and consent determine freshness. A requested daily check does not guarantee daily source data. [3]

Design separate routes for a supported risk change, a source outage and an unresolved discrepancy. Retain source references and reviewer corrections. Borrower outreach, payments, limit changes, collections and insurance administration remain in your authorized systems. Verification and analytical investigation are included stages within an entitled Insights or Signal workflow, not independent Amlok products. [2]

Prove the fit before expanding.

Independently review policy-to-agreement matching, installment extraction and recoverability assumptions. Hold out borrowers and later policy periods. Missing minimum-earned or refund terms should cause an explicit gap, not an invented recovery value. [4]

Compare arrears, recovery timing and net loss only after the relevant outcome horizon matures. Test endorsements, multiple policies and partial refunds. A useful early pilot can prove that reviewers reproduce the exposure bridge and identify unsupported recovery claims before attempting portfolio-loss predictions.

Agree success criteria before reviewing the test results. Compare the current process and the Amlok-supported process on the same permitted evidence, recording analyst time, corrections, unresolved cases and completed outputs. Report coverage alongside speed so incomplete files cannot make the workflow appear faster. Monitor quality by source availability and relevant customer cohorts, with uncertainty where samples are small.

Amlok’s public results currently document specific structured-loan and financial-evidence retrieval experiments. Those results are useful evidence about those tasks; they do not validate every product, institution or industry in this guide. A deployment claim needs a representative evaluation of your use case. [5]

  • Scope: choose one product, one decision moment, required evidence and a clearly accountable reviewer.
  • Replay: use dated historical snapshots with later outcomes kept out of the input evidence.
  • Shadow: compare outputs alongside your existing process before relying on them operationally.
  • Expand: review quality, data continuity and monitoring relevance before adding further cohorts or sources.
